The Netherlands – Land of Bicycles

Why cycling is so normal here – and why it might be great for you too!

When you come to live and work in the Netherlands, you may quickly notice one thing: bikes are everywhere! For most Dutch people, cycling is completely normal. They bike to work, to school, to the supermarket – or just for fun. But for many people from other countries, it’s not so common. Maybe you’ve never even been on a bike – and that’s totally okay. In this article, we explain why the bicycle is so important in the Netherlands, and why cycling might also be useful (and fun!) for you.

Great bike paths and safe routes
There are more bicycles than people in the Netherlands – really! That’s why there are so many bike paths. The country has one of the best cycling infrastructures in the world. These bike lanes are made especially for cyclists, often separated from the road and sometimes with their own traffic lights.

This makes cycling safe and easy. Did you know that cycling can sometimes be faster than going by car or bus? Thanks to smart shortcuts, you can skip traffic jams – and you never need to look for parking.

Cycling is healthy and fun
Cycling is good for your body and mind. You move outside in the fresh air, improve your fitness, and arrive at work relaxed. And there’s more: on a bike, you see much more of your surroundings – nature, quiet streets, flower fields or small villages. A bike ride is not only practical, but also a great way to enjoy your day.

The electric bike: even easier and faster
Maybe you’re thinking: “That sounds nice, but my work is far away.” No problem! The electric bike (also called an e-bike) is very popular in the Netherlands. You don’t have to pedal so hard, you ride faster, and you still arrive without effort. An e-bike is a good and safe option if you travel a longer distance or if you’re not used to cycling. It helps you go faster, without getting tired.

Cycling? Just give it a try!
Never cycled before? Or feeling nervous? Don’t worry – you’re not alone. We’re here to help. Ask your House of Work contact (account manager or job coach) about the options. Sometimes you can borrow or rent a bike through House of Work – or even take a cycling lesson. That way, you can get to work quickly and safely too! And one thing is certain: once you get used to cycling in the Netherlands, you might never want to stop!
